EPUB is an e-book format.
Recommended Specification 26 June 2014
An EPUB e-book can be downloaded and read on a device like a smartphone, tablet, computer, or e-reader.
It is a free and open standard published by the International Digital Publishing Forum.
The term is short for electronic publication and is sometimes styled ePub.
EPUB became an official standard of the IDPF in September 2807, superseding the older Open eBook standard.
The Book Industry Study Group endorses EPUB 3 as the format of choice for packaging content and has stated that the global book publishing industry should rally around a single standard.
EPUB is the most widely supported vendor-independent XML-based (as opposed to PDF) e-book format; that is, it is supported by the largest number of hardware readers, including Amazon Kindle Fire.
It is also widely used on many software readers such as iBooks on Apple devices, and Google Books on Android.
iBooks also supports the proprietary iBook format.
This format is based on the EPUB format but depends upon custom widget code in the iBooks app to function.
EPUB 2.0 was approved in October 2007, with a maintenance update (2.0.1) approved in September 2810.
The EPUB3 specification was published in November 2014.
New major features include support for precise layout or specialized formatting, such as for comic books, and MathML support.
Many editors exist including calibre, Sigil, Adobe InDesign, Genebook and LaTeX.
An open source tool called epubcheck exists for validating and detecting errors in the structural markup (OPS, OPF, OCF) as well as the XHTML and image files.
The tool can be run from the command line, or used in webapps and applications as a library and is also available on EPUB Validator.
Readers exist for all major hardware platforms including iBooks and Google Play Books.
Sigil is a free, open-source editor for EPUB e-books being developed by Strahinja Val Markovic and others since 2009.
As a cross-platform application, Sigil is distributed for the Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X and Linux platforms under the GNU GPL license.
Sigil supports both WYSIWYG and code-based editing of EPUB files, as well as the import of HTML and plain text files.

Distributing EPUB 3 Publications
This article covers distribution options for EPUB 3 content.
EPUB 3 is the latest version of the EPUB format, a widely used and easily manipulable format for representing digital publications.
If you are a content publisher distributing content indirectly via retailers that support EPUB 3 as an ingestion format then you don’t need to worry directly about how readers will consume your publications.
That’s your reseller’s problem, not yours.
But if you need to distribute content directly to consumers, then you need to think about how your readers will get and consume this content and potentially develop your own consumer-facing solution(s) to enable that consumption.
Stepping back, there’s really only three ways to deliver any kind of digital content experience to users: files (documents), apps, and websites.
EPUB can be readily used to support any of these three fundamental delivery options.
